Teak Crafts

One of the major use of Teak is to make furniture and handicraft items for the interior decorations. The Teak museum exhibits a large collection of different types of crafts made out of teak wood. Teak is the first choice of any carpenter, especially in Kerala, since its easy to craft anything out of this wood and it lasts for centuries. Most of the ships and 'urus' of old days were made out of teak wood.

Ancient homes and 'tharavadus' of Kerala used to have a number of teak furniture, and most of these houses' ceilings and floorings were made of teak. Before the independence of India, the British were using the teaks from Nilambur to meet the timber requirements of the British Royal Navy, Railways, etc. During this period the ship building industry and timber exporting has flourished to its peak and Kallai in Kozhikkode district had become the center of timber exports in the world.
